UK Snooker Championship
The UK Championship is a major snooker tournament for professional players. It’s the most important ranking event after the World Snooker Championship, and carries one and a half times the standard tournament ranking points. This means it is vital for players to do well if they want to boost their ranking and enter the top 16, therefore qualifying for prestigious events like the Masters.
The format of the UK Snooker Championship
After the qualifiers, there are 16 matches in round one, all best of 11 frames. The loser of each match is knocked out of the competition, often resulting in surprise departures early on. The semi finals are best of 17, while the grand final sees the last two players standing compete in a 19-frame match. The winner of the UK Championship receives £100,000, while there’s an additional £5,000 prize for the player who makes the highest break during one of the televised matches.
The UK Snooker Championship is held at the Barbican Centre in York, at the end of the calendar year. Of course, snooker betting fans will be looking to place profitable bets on likely victors well in advance while the odds are still long. The event is always a real treat for snooker buffs as the world’s top players – including previous winners such as Higgins, Ding and O’Sullivan – vie for the iconic silver trophy in a week-long tournament.
The history of the UK Championship
The UK Snooker Championship was established in 1977, and was only open to players with a UK passport. The inaugural tournament was held in Blackpool before moving to Preston for the next 20 years. In 1984, the leading snooker event was opened up to all professionals, meaning it could also become a world ranking event. Over the years, some of the stars of the sport have racked up multiple victories, including Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O’Sullivan.
However, the UK Championship is also famous for being one of the Triple Crown events, along with the World Snooker Championship and the Masters. It is a massive achievement for a player to win just one of these tournaments, and since the UK Championship started in 1977 it became something of a badge of honour to win all three. However, Davis, Hendry and left-handed Welshman Mark Williams are the only three players to have won the Triple Crown in one season.
